Some of physical properties of NPD have been measured, demonstrating its very high elastic stiffness, high transparency to infrared-visible lights, relatively low thermal conductivity, etc. Attempts have been made to apply this novel material to anvils for various types of high-pressure apparatus, which suggest potential of NPD for generation of temperatures and pressures higher than those achieved in conventional apparatus using commercially available polycrystalline and/or single crystal diamonds.

  • Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), The behavior and distribution of water and carbon dioxide in the Earth's interior, INOUE Toru, NISHIYAMA Norimasa, OHFUJI Hiroaki, MATSUKAGE Kyoko, KONO Yoshio, YAMADA Akihiro, HIGO Yuji, Distribution of water in the Earth’s interiors and the effect of water for phase transition boundaries were clarified, and the water content in the Earth’s interior s was estimated by combining with the seismic data. Moreover, the studies for the dehydration reaction and the equation of state of the slab constituent minerals, and also the study for the effect of water to the mantle mineralogy were carried out. In addition, the study of the compositional dependence for the water content in mantle minerals was carried out. We also tried to determine the water content of magma as a function of pressure and temperature.
  • Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), Technical development of elastic wave velocity measurement on partially molten peridotite at high pressures and high temperatures, KONO Yoshio, Technical development of elastic wave velocity measurement on partially molten peridotite was conducted mainly for following three issues : (1)Development of elastic wave velocity measurement at temperatures higher than previous studies (up to 1400℃), (2) Development of elastic wave velocity measurement for capsulated molten sample, (3) Investigation for the effect of ultrasonic frequency on elastic wave signal from partially molten peridotite. As a result, I succeeded to develop elastic wave velocity measurements on partially molten peridotite up to 5 GPa and 1700℃.
