Effects of land cover changes and rainfall variation on the landslide size–frequency distribution in a mountainous region of western Japan2024/02/23Takashi KimuraGeosciences14/ 3, 59-59Research paper (scientific journal)10.3390/geosciences14030059URLMDPI AGThis study investigated the size–frequency distribution of 512 landslides triggered by heavy rain in July 2018 on Omishima Island, western Japan. Since the island has undergone rapid land use and land cover changes in recent decades, this study statistically examined the impact of past land cover changes on the shape of, and local variability in, the size–frequency distribution using the inverse gamma model. The possible influence of rainfall conditions was also examined. The landslides were classified based on the severity of anthropogenic disturbance and rainfall using a 56-year (1962–2018) land cover trajectory map and hourly rainfall distribution data. The results indicated that the land cover change (mainly forest conversion into farmland and its abandonment) affected the size and frequency of landslides that occurred decades after the disturbance. Although all landslide groups had similar small rollovers (location of probability peak; 0.042–0.075 × 10−3 km2), the scaling exponents of the negative power-law decay were lower for landslides in secondary forest and newly developed farmland (ρ = 1.084–1.231) than in old forest and farmland (ρ = 2.504–2.611). This difference is considered significant compared to general exponent values (ρ = 2.30 ± 0.56), suggesting that farmland development after 1962 caused widespread slope instability, leading to an increase in the proportion of large landslides. By contrast, no clear correlations with rainfall intensity were found, primarily due to complex localised variations in rainfall conditions.

Simulation of shallow landslides induced by typhoon in July 2018 in Gogoshima, Ehime Prefecture, Japan based on a simple model2023/08/01T V Nguyen T Ozaki A Wakai T Kimura G Sato N KitamuraIOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering1289/ 1, 012106Research paper (international conference proceedings)10.1088/1757-899x/1289/1/012106URLURL_2IOP PublishingAbstract Every year, many typhoons make landfall in Japan causing disasters on mountain slopes across the country. Rainfall induced landslides in Japan mostly occur at shallow depths. Developing simple models of rainfall-induced landslides provides a practical alternative to finite element methods in large-scale landslide modelling and prediction. Therefore, authors previously developed a simple method to calculate the advance of the wetting front into fine sand slopes subjected rainfall. However, during intense rainfall, the excess rainfall that cannot be absorbed into the soil will generate runoff on the slope surface, which has not been included in the previous model. Thus, this study integrated the model with a surface water modeling module to simulate the disasters more comprehensively. The surface water is controlled by 2D shallow water equations and the digital elevation model depression removal process. The combined model is able to provide the maps of the wetting front, surface water depth, and factor of safety of slope during rainstorms. The newly integrated model was used to simulate rainfall-induced disasters in the Gogoshima Island during the July 2018 typhoon. The simulation results disclosed that both moving of the wetting front and surface water flows contributed to shallow landslides along catchments in this island.
